about

Vermont among many rural long Wintered places, has been know to have a fifth season of the year, Mud Season. This is the time when dirt roads, making up a good deal of those traveled, water logged from Winter thaw turn to mud.

lyrics

Mud Season Minuet
Julie James ©2013

Light upon the water dancing as the river flows by,
the clouds in the sky casting shadows as they float along.

Breezes blowing, air is flowing through the branches of trees
as they’re swaying to and fro

Chorus A:
The sky is blue. The Earth is brown.
The air is warm. The snow melts down.
The songbirds are greeting the morn.

Winter held us in her stillness and the quiet deep inside,
Hoping patience will abide, contemplation our internal song.

Kicking up their heels, running through the fields
the horses will nay, the joy of a Springtime day

Chorus B:
The sky is grey. The rain comes down.
The ground is soft, mud all around.
The moose leaves deep tracks in the sand.

There’ll be trout lilies and trillium and marsh marigolds,
The mystery it holds, the secrets of the forest floor.

Wild leeks, fiddleheads, Oysters and Morels,
and you can see right through the woods

Chorus C:
The sky is white, a sudden squall,
a foot of snow surprised us all.
In a week it will melt into mud.

Then the pussy willows, cherry blossoms and the apple trees bloom.
crocus, daffodils, tulip flowers will too

Ewes are lambing, chicks are hatching and a robin eats a worm
as she’s tugging it from the ground.

Chorus A:
The sky is blue. The Earth is brown.
The air is warm. The snow melts down.
The songbirds are greeting the morn.

When the sugar houses fire up with sparks and with steam,
the sweetness of Spring calls us out into the open air

With the thaw the mountain waters running to the
rivers and streams with the promises of green.
